1. Swelling and Bruising
One of the most common side effects of hair transplant surgery is swelling and bruising around the donor and recipient areas. The swelling usually peaks around the 2nd or 3rd day after the procedure and gradually subsides over the next few days. Bruising may also occur but typically resolves within a week. To reduce swelling and bruising, your doctor may recommend applying cold compresses and taking prescribed medications.
2. Itching and Discomfort
Itching and discomfort in the donor and recipient areas are common side effects following a hair transplant. These symptoms are usually temporary and can be managed with over-the-counter medications or prescribed creams. Avoid scratching the transplanted area to prevent any damage to the grafts.
3. Infection
Although infection after hair transplant surgery is rare, it is essential to follow post-operative care instructions to minimize the risk. Signs of infection include redness, swelling, pain, and discharge from the surgical sites. If you suspect an infection, contact your doctor immediately for evaluation and treatment.
4. Shock Loss
Shock loss refers to the temporary shedding of transplanted hair following the procedure. This is a normal part of the hair growth cycle and the lost hair usually regrows within a few months. It is important to be patient and follow your doctor's advice during this phase.
5. Scarring
Scarring is a possible side effect of hair transplant surgery, especially with older techniques like strip harvesting. Modern techniques such as FUE (Follicular Unit Extraction) minimize visible scarring by extracting individual hair follicles. Proper wound care and following post-operative instructions can help reduce the risk of scarring.
